Lexicon PCM 60 Digital Reverberator

Lexicon PCM 60
The Lexicon PCM 60 was the first in a long line of PCM named digital reverbs and it offered an affordable entry into the world of Lexicon digital reverbs. The Lexicon PCM 60 was a good digital reverb however it never enjoyed the same sales or current legendary status as the later model Lexicon PCM 70 would enjoy upon its release.

Lexicon PCM 60 Digital Reverberator Details

The Lexicon PCM 60 Digital Reverberator was developed as a cost-effective digital reverb solution suitable for instruments, live sound systems and studio mixing environments. Designed around advanced digital audio processing technology of its time, the Lexicon PCM 60 delivered clean signal handling and high-quality reverberation within a compact and straightforward format.

Operation of the Lexicon PCM 60 is deliberately simple, with a clear front-panel layout and illuminated LEDs to confirm selected functions. A five-segment headroom indicator provides accurate visual feedback of input levels, allowing users to optimise gain structure and avoid overload.

Two primary reverb programmes are provided: Room and Plate. From these foundations, users can adjust perceived space and decay characteristics using controls for size, reverb time and bass and treble contouring. These parameters enable a broad range of reverberation variations from the two core algorithms.

Rotary controls govern input gain, reverb mix and output level. A dedicated Bypass switch is included, with the option of foot pedal control for remote operation. When the Lexicon PCM 60 is powered down, it automatically defaults to Bypass mode.

Connectivity has been designed for flexibility. The Lexicon PCM 60 offers a balanced or unbalanced mono input, two unbalanced stereo outputs and an effects loop, all on standard 6.35mm jack connectors. Rear-panel push-buttons allow selection of high or low input sensitivity and high or low output level, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of external equipment.

Frequency contouring behaviour is programme dependent. Within the Room programme, selecting Bass in increases low-frequency reverb time by approximately 50 percent below 800Hz, while Treble in reduces high-frequency reverb time by approximately 25 percent above 800Hz and introduces a gentle roll-off above 2kHz to simulate acoustic absorption. With Bass out and Treble out selected, the response remains flat.

Within the Plate programme, Bass out reduces low-frequency reverb time by approximately 50 percent below 800Hz, while Bass in increases it by approximately 50 percent below 800Hz. Selecting Treble in decreases high-frequency reverb time by approximately 25 percent above 800Hz and adds a gentle roll-off above 2kHz. When Bass out and Treble in are selected together, the response remains flat.

The Lexicon PCM 60 reflects extended development informed by user feedback and Lexicon’s established experience in professional digital audio equipment, with its design focused on reliable performance and consistent reverberation quality.

An excellent vintage piece very well suited for drums. Tons of mojo and very fast in the creative process. Find the right space in about 20-30 seconds. Extremely well built. Only drawbacks are a mono input. The room sounds are great for drum sounds. The plates are cleaner, brighter and shorter by comparison. A great companion to a PCM80/90/91 or an Eventide H3000 for sound design/mixing Broadcast material.
