Mark Stent Biography

Born in England in 1965, Mark Stent began his career in the 1980s as a tea boy and assistant engineer at Trident Studios in London before moving to Jacobs Studios and eventually Olympic Studios, where he rose to chief engineer. His nickname “Spike” came from his spiky blond hair and his sharp approach to mixing. Early in his career he engineered for acts such as The KLF, Massive Attack, and Depeche Mode, gaining a reputation for crafting expansive, textured mixes that worked equally well on radio and club systems.

By the 1990s, Stent had become one of the most in-demand mixers in the industry, working closely with producers including Flood, William Orbit, and Brian Eno. He mixed U2’s Pop (1997), Madonna’s Ray of Light (1998), and Björk’s Post (1995), each noted for their fusion of organic performance and electronic experimentation. His influence continued into the 2000s and 2010s, shaping the sound of modern pop through collaborations with Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, Beyoncé, and Harry Styles, as well as ongoing work with alternative artists such as Muse and Arcade Fire.

Now based primarily in Los Angeles, Stent operates from his own facility, Mixsuite LA, while maintaining strong ties to his roots in London’s studio culture.
