AEA RPQ3 Microphone Preamplifier

AEA RPQ3
AEA’s RPQ3 Ribbon Preamp and EQ offers two channels of 85 dB JFET gain, ultra-high 68 kΩ impedance, and CurveShaper™ EQ, optimised for ribbons but ideal for all microphones.

AEA RPQ3 Microphone Preamplifier Details

The AEA RPQ3 Ribbon Preamp and EQ is built around AEA’s newest third-generation circuit design, delivering two channels of exceptionally high-output, high-impedance, and low-noise gain. Specifically designed to optimise the performance of ribbon microphones, the RPQ3 reveals the full warmth, depth, and natural tonality ribbons are known for.

With up to 85 dB of sweet and quiet JFET gain, it effortlessly captures even the quietest sources without added noise, making it an ideal choice for ribbons, dynamics, and condensers alike.

The AEA RPQ3 incorporates AEA’s unique CurveShaper™ EQ, giving engineers powerful control at the very start of the signal path. The low-frequency control addresses proximity build-up, while the high-frequency boost with slope control enhances air and presence, particularly useful for ribbons or mix busses that often benefit from added top end.

This EQ design is flexible yet musical, enabling subtle shaping or more assertive tonal control without compromise.

A defining feature of the AEA RPQ3 is its ultra-high input impedance of 68 kΩ, which preserves and enhances the full transient detail and frequency response of passive microphones. Unlike lower-impedance preamps that restrict a mic’s natural range, the AEA RPQ3’s design ensures a rich low end, open highs, and articulate transients.

Post-Mic and Pre-EQ inserts provide routing flexibility, while phantom power and polarity invert switches add convenience.

Built in the USA, the AEA RPQ3 is part of AEA’s family of high-performance preamps, alongside the RPQ500, TRP3, and TRP500, all designed to open up microphones with pristine, transparent gain and exceptionally high impedance.

With the AEA RPQ3, engineers gain a versatile and noise-free tool that enhances the natural character of every microphone, but particularly excels with ribbons.
