Bettermaker Valve Stereo Passive Equaliser Details

The Bettermaker Valve Stereo Passive Equaliser (VSPE) is a professional analogue mastering equaliser that combines vacuum tube circuitry with handcrafted transformers and digital DAW integration. Designed for studio mixing and mastering, the unit features a fully analogue signal path with a transformer output and vacuum tube drive stage, controlled via a hybrid plugin that allows for instant recall, automation, and remote control of hardware parameters.

The VSPE is a digitally controlled analogue stereo passive equaliser featuring a transformer output and vacuum tube drive stage. It is designed for professional mastering and studio mixing applications, offering a signal path that includes premium-grade military NOS Soviet vacuum tubes, low noise FET-input Burr-Brown opamps, hand-matched inductors and capacitors, and in-house manufactured Bettermaker TT-1 audio transformers. The unit is designed, developed, and built in Poland.

The hardware features a HEAT mode that drives the internal gain stage harder to add saturation and colour to the sound, with an output pad applied simultaneously to keep overall gain constant. The vacuum tubes used are double-triode tubes originally manufactured in the USSR during the 1970s and 1980s for military aerospace electronics, characterised by extremely low noise, minimal distortion, and reduced microphonics. The Bettermaker TT-1 transformers are designed to maintain musical coherence in low frequencies while minimising harmonic distortion.

The Bettermaker Valve includes a hybrid DAW plugin available in AAX Native, AU, and VST3 formats. This plugin allows users to recall all hardware settings instantly, automate parameters, and control the hardware remotely via USB. The plugin also provides high-quality digital high-pass and low-pass filters, a spectrum analyser, presets, and session snapshots. When connected to the hardware, the plugin unlocks dual mono operation, audio level metering, quantize (step) mode for physical knobs, and an Auto Audition function that solos the currently selected band.

The front panel controls include knobs for Low Frequency Boost, Low Frequency Cut, High Frequency Boost, High Frequency Cut, and Bandwidth. A GAIN button allows the High Cut knob to function as an output level control within a +/- 8dB range. Holding the GAIN button for two seconds resets all filters to a flat frequency response. The unit features a true bypass engage button and an on/standby power button. The internal non-volatile memory restores all settings after a power loss and tracks power cycle counts and up-time.

For optimal performance, the Bettermaker Valve requires balanced XLR connections for audio and a USB connection for DAW control and recall. The USB link does not stream audio; external AD/DA converters are required. The unit requires an external AC/DC power adapter and will not operate on USB power alone. Users are advised to allow the vacuum tubes to warm up for at least 20 minutes before use and to use standby mode when not in operation to extend tube life.
