The Eventide DSP7500 Stereo Ultra-Harmonizer Effects Processor expanded the DSP7000 platform with full-function sampling, hundreds of additional presets, broadcast and post-production effects, advanced looping, time compression and expansion, while retaining the DSP7000’s two-channel Ultra-Harmonizer processing, modular algorithm construction, UltraShifter pitch processing, advanced reverbs, mastering tools and flexible digital and analogue I/O.

Eventide DSP7500 Harmonizer® Effects Processor Details

The Eventide DSP7500 Stereo Ultra-Harmonizer Effects Processor was a special edition 7000-series Eventide processor based on the DSP7000 platform. Eventide described the Eventide DSP7500 as a continuation of its long-standing “500” model tradition, where the “500” versions offered the standard Ultra-Harmonizer processor features with additional capabilities and were positioned as exceptional value models. The Eventide DSP7500 followed this approach by starting with the performance and feature set of the DSP7000 and adding full-function sampling along with hundreds of additional presets.

The Eventide DSP7500 was designed as a two-channel Ultra-Harmonizer effects processor for music production, recording, remixing, broadcast and post-production applications. Like the DSP7000, it built on the heritage of the DSP4000 series while adding major enhancements, greater processing power and an improved user interface. The 7000 series was designed to run larger and more complex effects algorithms, providing advanced reverbs, chorus effects, pitch changing, mastering tools, modulation, filtering and multi-effects processing in a single stereo rack unit.

A central part of the Eventide DSP7500 was Eventide’s building block effects architecture. Rather than using only a limited number of fixed algorithms, the Eventide DSP7500 used onboard effects module building blocks to create its factory programs and presets. Each preset could be treated as its own unique algorithm, built from combinations of effects modules. This architecture allowed the Eventide DSP7500 to combine delay, reverb, pitch shifting, filtering, EQ and dynamics in flexible configurations.

The Algorithm Construction Kit allowed users to create custom effects by selecting and linking effects modules using the unit’s LCD screen, or by using a connected PC for an expanded view. This made it possible to build signal chains in a modular way, such as placing pitch shift after reverb, combining multiple effects, or applying EQ only to selected sections of an effects structure. The Eventide DSP7500 therefore functioned as both a preset-based processor and a programmable effects design platform.

The Eventide DSP7500 included all of the DSP7000’s standard capabilities, including reverbs, delays, pitch shifting, UltraShifter, equalisation, phasing, multiband compression, noise gating, tap tempo effects, mastering tools, flanging, diatonic shifting, chorus and dynamic processing. The Eventide DSP7500 added several hundred additional presets that were especially useful in post-production and broadcast applications.

Pitch processing was a major feature of the Eventide DSP7500. The unit included UltraShifter, Eventide’s vocal pitch-shifting system, designed for pitch change, vocal harmony generation, automatic pitch correction and voice transformation. The DSP7500 also included diatonic shifting and other pitch shift effects, making it suitable for both musical and production uses.

Reverb was another key part of the Eventide DSP7500. The 7000 series included stereo versions of reverbs associated with Eventide’s Orville multichannel processor, including small spaces, big halls, plates, arenas, rooms, chambers and Blackhole. Eventide described the 7000-series reverbs as unique algorithmic designs rather than simple variations of the same few reverb structures, with each reverb assembled from collections of algorithm modules.

The Eventide DSP7500 also included mastering tools such as 16 or 32 band stereo EQs, 3 or 4 band stereo multiband compression and a Mastering Suite preset bank. The Radio Compress preset was designed to preview how a song might sound when played on radio and heard through typical radios, stereos and boom boxes. The unit also included MIDI clock presets and tap tempo banks, with effects such as sample and hold filters, FM panners, tremolos, choruses and vibratos that could lock to incoming MIDI clock or be controlled manually.

For remixing and sound design, the Eventide DSP7500 included filter presets, modulating delays and multi-effects. The Modulating Delays bank offered 31 presets covering chorus, flanging and other delay-based modulation effects. The Multi-effects bank allowed combinations such as stereo phaser with reverb, stereo delay with compression and filtering, and the Waterized preset, which combined pitch, chorusing and reverb.

The main addition over the DSP7000 was the DSP7500’s full-function sampler. The Eventide DSP7500 included a highly flexible sampler capable of 174 seconds mono or 87 seconds stereo sampling. It supported advanced stereo looping and multiple looping, allowing several samples to be stacked and independently edited. Samples could be pitch shifted, time compressed or expanded, and tap tempo looping was also included.

The sampler made the Eventide DSP7500 useful beyond conventional effects processing. The source material describes examples such as time compressing an entire 60-second stereo commercial without varispeeding, and using the sampler for auto-replacement of snare and kick drum tracks. These functions made the Eventide DSP7500 particularly useful for broadcast, post-production and music production tasks requiring timing adjustment, replacement and creative sample manipulation.

Broadcast and post-production users were also served by additional Eventide DSP7500 presets created by sound designer Jay Rose. These presets provided audio environments and voice treatments such as aircraft flight deck announcements, fast-food drive-up windows, computer chip-driven toys, television in another room, cellular phone effects, fantasy voices and character treatments. These presets were intended to create production effects quickly without building the environments from scratch.

The Eventide DSP7500 was also designed for practical studio use. It included a large LCD display, front-panel controls, Eventide’s control knob and keypad, digital and analogue I/O, removable memory card preset storage, remote control inputs and outputs, MIDI connections and 24-bit conversion at up to 96kHz. DSP4000 series memory card presets and program libraries were supported with few exceptions.

The Eventide DSP7500 used stereo AES/EBU or S/PDIF digital I/O at 44.1kHz to 96kHz, 24-bit analogue conversion, balanced XLR analogue output, analogue input using any combination of two XLR inputs or two mono jack inputs, and a PCMCIA memory card interface. It provided sample rates of 96kHz, 88.2kHz, 48kHz, 44.1kHz or external, with analogue input dynamic range greater than 105dB and signal-to-noise ratio greater than 105dB A-weighted.
