Eventide HM80 Harmonizer

Eventide HM80
The Eventide HM80 Harmonizer brought core digital delay and pitch processing into a more accessible format for musicians, enabling live use of time-based effects previously limited to high-end studio equipment.

Eventide HM80 Harmonizer Details

The Eventide HM80 Harmonizer, released in 1978, was developed as a more accessible alternative to the original Eventide H910 Harmonizer, which had been introduced in 1976 as a high-cost studio processor. Designed by Eventide founder Richard Factor, the HM80 was intended to bring digital time-based effects into the hands of working musicians, particularly guitarists and keyboard players who required a portable and practical solution for live performance. At a time when digital audio processing relied on large numbers of early logic chips, the HM80 represented a significant engineering effort to reduce cost and size while retaining core functionality.

The Eventide HM80 Harmonizer provided a range of time modification effects including delay, pitch change, capture and repeat, and time reversal. It allowed users to combine these processes in various ways, offering flexibility beyond single-purpose effects units. Delay capabilities extended up to 270 milliseconds, with repeat and feedback functions enabling extended echo effects. Pitch shifting was available up to plus or minus one octave, and could be externally controlled, allowing real-time manipulation during performance. The unit also included a reverse mode, enabling playback of captured audio in reverse, along with the ability to create forward and backward harmonies in real time.

The Eventide HM80 Harmonizer was designed with direct instrument integration in mind, featuring guitar-level input and compatibility with amplifier outputs. It included standard 6.35 mm jack connections and offered a simple control layout for live use. External control options included pitch manipulation and repeat triggering, with support for expression pedals and auxiliary switches. A two-colour LED provided input level indication, assisting with signal management during operation.

Although not designed as a floor-based stompbox, due to the power requirements of early digital circuitry, the Eventide HM80 Harmonizer predated dedicated delay pedals such as the Boss DD-2 by several years. It enabled musicians to incorporate advanced digital processing into live setups for the first time at a reduced cost compared to studio units. While still relatively expensive, it was approximately half the price of the H910, making it viable for a broader range of users including performers, composers, and educators.
