Released in 1983, the JVC DD-VR9 was a three-head U-Turn quick auto-reverse direct-drive cassette deck from JVC’s DIGIFINE Series, designed around accuracy, convenience and ease of operation. It combined automatic two-sided recording and playback with a three-head configuration, computer-controlled tape tuning, digital peak display memory, Dolby B/C noise reduction and a direct-drive transport using Pulse Servo motor technology.
The JVC DD-VR9 was built as an auto-reverse record and playback deck, allowing both sides of a cassette to be recorded or played automatically. Its U-Turn quick auto-reverse mechanism used a sensor system with a light emitter and receptor positioned in the cassette-shell guidepin. Reverse action occurred when the sensor detected the leader tape, interrupting music for only a fraction of a second. The mechanism also avoided plungers, helping make the auto-reverse action smoother and quieter.
A key part of the JVC DD-VR9 was JVC’s exclusive Flip Reverse Head System. This was designed to maintain uniform response in both tape travel directions, while a Jewel Lock mechanism helped prevent head misalignment. The deck used a three-head configuration with discrete heads for recording, playback and erasure, giving it monitoring capability during recording. The recording head used JVC’s Ceramic-clad SA construction, with the SA recording head capped by ceramic material to prevent head magnetisation and support smooth tape flow. Playback used a ferrite head, while erasure was handled by two two-gap ferrite erase heads.
The tape transport used direct-drive Pulse Servo motors for the capstans during forward play and recording. JVC removed cams, pulleys, belts and gears from the speed-critical capstan drive, improving transport accuracy. The Pulse Servo motor used electronic Hall-effect elements for polarity switching, avoiding mechanical contact and the noise that could result from it. The motor was also described as coreless and slotless, avoiding cogging, and included an integral frequency generator servo system for high-precision electronic speed monitoring. This allowed the system to compensate immediately for speed error.
The JVC DD-VR9 also included JVC’s computerised B.E.S.T. tuning system, standing for Bias, Equalisation and Sensitivity of Tape. This system analysed the electromagnetic properties of the cassette tape and adjusted the deck’s electronics to match it. A one-chip microcomputer first determined the optimum bias and equalisation, then identified the proper sensitivity, with the process taking approximately 15 seconds. The system was designed to provide flat response, low distortion, computer accuracy and one-touch operation.
For level setting, the JVC DD-VR9 included a Digital Peak Display with memory peak. Recording levels could be read over the 0 to +12dB range using dB-referred numerals, while the highest peaks encountered during playback or recording could be memorised and recalled instantly. The front panel also featured fluorescent peak meters and a four-way digital counter, giving minute and second remaining tape time, a four-digit tape-expended display, elapsed time and Music Scan programme countdown.
Many of the less frequently used controls were hidden in a motor-driven slide-out control panel, helping keep the main front panel cleaner while still providing access to extended functions. Additional convenience features included Index Scan, Blank Search, Memory with Block Repeat, Multi Music Scan, Auto Rec Mute, timer start, two-motor full-logic control, logic control mechanism and compatibility with the optional R-70E remote control. These convenience features also operated in auto-reverse mode.
