JVC VP-900 Digital Audio Processor

JVC VP-900
The JVC VP-900 Digital Audio Processor was a 16-bit, 44.1kHz two-channel PCM processor forming the core of JVC’s Digital Audio Mastering System. Featuring JVC’s BP bi-parity error correction, advanced CRC protection and compatibility with ¾ inch and ½ inch VCR transports, it was designed for Compact Disc premastering, broadcast and synchronised audio/video applications.

JVC VP-900 Digital Audio Processor Details

Released during the early years of professional digital mastering, the JVC VP-900 formed the core of JVC’s Digital Audio Mastering System and represented the company’s direct entry into the two-channel PCM mastering market. Designed as a professional two-channel processor for digital recording and editing, the VP-900 was developed to meet the growing demand for high resolution digital masters suitable for Compact Disc production, Hi-Fi video and broadcast applications.

As part of a modular system that included the JVC DS-DM900 Digital Audio Mixer, AE-900V Digital Audio Editor and various synchronisation and interface units, the JVC VP-900 stood at the heart of JVC’s alternative to the established Sony PCM adaptor workflow.

The JVC VP-900 was designed first and foremost to maintain absolute fidelity between input and output. It employed newly developed low distortion A/D and D/A converter units with a low transmission bit rate and exclusive JVC BP bi-parity recording format. JVC’s BP system provided advanced error detection and correction capability, combining a 22-bit CRC system, cyclic redundancy check codes and a triple error correction structure. The system was specified to correct random errors, burst errors of up to 37 continuous horizontal lines and fully eliminate tape dropouts, providing the reliability required for professional mastering and archiving.

Sixteen-bit linear quantisation was used, delivering a dynamic range exceeding 90dB. Frequency response was specified from 10Hz to 20kHz within ±0.5dB, and harmonic distortion was stated at less than 0.02 percent at 1kHz. The sampling frequency was 44.1kHz, making the JVC VP-900 directly compatible with Compact Disc standards. Emphasis time constants of 50µs and 15µs were supported, and dropout compensation incorporated 22-bit CRC, 2-parity and triple correction methods.

Unlike some earlier digital adaptors, the JVC VP-900 was designed to work with both professional ¾ inch U-matic VCRs and ½ inch VHS recorders. Professional ¾ inch and ½ inch VHS VCRs could be used for recording, editing and playback, with recording times of up to two hours. JVC’s design emphasised reduced power consumption and improved reliability through the use of CMOS LSIs and input and output circuits employing non transformer, low distortion A/D and D/A stages.

The JVC VP-900 was not conceived as a standalone product but as the central processing engine of a flexible mastering architecture. In recording and playback configurations, it interfaced directly with VCR transports and the RM-900 remote control unit. In editing systems for two-channel digital masters, it integrated with the DS-DM900 Digital Audio Mixer and AE-900V Digital Audio Editor.

In CD and CD-ROM cutting configurations, the JVC VP-900 and DS-DM900 formed the signal path feeding cutting systems. The DS-SU900 A/V System Synchronising Unit enabled synchronised audio and video recording for broadcast and videodisc mastering, demonstrating that the JVC VP-900 platform was intended to operate across both audio-only and audio-visual production workflows.

The JVC VP-900 Digital Audio Processor was therefore more than a two-channel PCM adaptor. It was the central digital processing unit in a comprehensive mastering system designed for Compact Disc production, Hi-Fi video, broadcasting and synchronised audio/video applications, offering JVC’s BP error correction format and modular system expandability as an alternative to competing digital mastering solutions.

The JVC VP-900 was not designed as a standalone unit but as part of JVC’s modular professional digital audio mastering system. It formed the audio processor and PCM encoder section of the DM-900 Digital Audio System, which combined digital audio encoding, video formatting and U-matic transport integration for two-channel digital mastering.

Within the system architecture, the JVC VP-900 handled 16-bit linear analogue-to-digital conversion at 44.1kHz or 44.056kHz and formatted the data to conform to NTSC video standards, allowing the signal to be recorded onto professional video tape recorders.

The wider system included compatible U-matic transports and synchronisation components, enabling editing, digital dubbing and external sync operation, positioning the JVC VP-900 as a core element in a complete broadcast-ready digital mastering chain.
