Linn LinnDrum Drum Computer

Linn LinnDrum
Released in 1982, the LinnDrum expanded on the LM-1 with 15 sampled drum sounds, user-changeable chips, song sequencing and pro-level mixing. It became the defining drum machine of the 1980s, powering hits by Madonna, Michael Jackson and Prince, and cementing sampled drums as the sound of modern pop.

Linn LinnDrum Drum Computer Details

The LinnDrum, released in 1982 as the successor to the Linn LM-1, became one of the most important drum machines of the decade. It built on the LM-1’s breakthrough of digitally sampled acoustic drum sounds but at a lower price point and with expanded features, ensuring far wider adoption.

The LinnDrum offered 15 sounds including bass, snare, side-stick snare, open and closed hi-hat, crash and ride cymbals, toms, congas, cabasa, tambourine, cowbell and handclaps, all recorded to professional studio quality. Sounds were tunable in pitch, and individual outputs were provided for multitrack recording.

Its stereo mixer featured volume and pan sliders, allowing flexible balance before sending sounds to tape or PA. The machine stored 49 rhythm patterns, all programmable in real time with adjustable timing correction, and allowed full song structuring with intros, verses, choruses, fills and endings.

Externally, the LinnDrum could be triggered by drum synthesiser pads or audio sources, synced to tape, and offered control voltage inputs for dynamic pitch control. Crucially, the drum sounds were user-changeable, with “chips” that could be swapped out for alternative or custom samples, ensuring it stayed relevant as tastes evolved.

Cassette storage made it possible to archive and reload data, while its robust build and intuitive front panel made it suitable for both studio and stage.

The impact of the LinnDrum on music was immense. Selling around 5,000 units, ten times more than the Linn LM-1, it dominated pop, rock and R\&B production throughout the 1980s. It became a studio standard, used on records by Madonna (Like a Virgin), a-ha (Take On Me), Michael Jackson (Thriller), Stevie Nicks (Stand Back), Prince, Tears for Fears, and countless others.

Its crisp snares, punchy kicks and iconic claps became instantly recognisable hallmarks of 1980s production. More affordable than the Linn LM-1 yet maintaining high-end fidelity, the LinnDrum became the go-to rhythm machine for producers seeking realism and programmability. Its influence stretched beyond pop into film scoring, advertising and early hip hop, where its precise timing and polished drum tones offered a new professional sheen.

The LinnDrum’s architecture also set the blueprint for later samplers and drum machines, including the Linn 9000 and Akai MPC series. In retrospect, the LinnDrum stands as one of the defining sounds of the 1980s, embodying the digital turn in rhythm production and leaving a legacy still heard in retro-inspired pop and electronic music today.
