The Roland TR-8S Rhythm Performer was released in 2018 as the spiritual successor to the TR-8, embodying Roland’s legacy of rhythm machines while expanding into new territory for live performance and studio production. It is the most comprehensive drum machine Roland had ever produced at the time, combining authentic circuit-modelled recreations of the company’s most iconic instruments with modern FM synthesis, sample playback, and deep sequencing capabilities.
At its core, the Roland TR-8S incorporates Roland’s Analog Circuit Behavior (ACB) technology to recreate the Roland TR-808, TR-606, TR-909, TR-707, TR-727, and CR-78 with extraordinary accuracy. These models are not samples but full circuit-level emulations, capturing the quirks and behaviour of the originals. To this foundation, Roland added an expanded sonic palette: futuristic FM drum models with editable parameters, a wide collection of onboard samples, and the ability to import and manipulate user samples. Each sound engine, analogue-modelled, FM, and sample, can be tuned, shaped, layered, and processed in detail, creating hybrid kits that bridge classic and modern drum design.
The Roland TR-8S also pushed performance flexibility with its intuitive sequencer. It retains the classic TR-REC step-programming interface while enhancing it with features such as sub-steps for rolls and ratchets, velocity-sensitive performance pads, real-time recording, adjustable last-step per track for polyrhythms, probability-based sequencing, and motion recording for automation of virtually any parameter. Each pattern stores kits, effect settings, knob positions, and can include up to eight variations plus fills, enabling long, evolving sequences for live performance. Fills can be triggered manually, automated over defined bar lengths, or shaped with Roland’s Scatter function for rhythmic stutter effects.
Effects are integral to the Roland TR-8S’s sound design approach. Each channel includes a customisable control knob for assignable parameters, alongside a powerful set of percussion-focused effects ranging from delay, overdrive, distortion, phaser, and filters, to reverb and more. These can be saved per kit, ensuring consistency in live and studio work. The FM Morph control provided a macro knob for sweeping through FM parameters with expressive movement.
From a connectivity standpoint, the TR-8S was designed as a centrepiece for modern hybrid setups. It features eight assignable analogue outputs, a dedicated trigger out, stereo inputs for external sources, and the ability to use its outputs as extra triggers. With its onboard USB audio/MIDI interface, the Roland TR-8S integrates seamlessly with DAWs, supporting multi-channel audio transfer and MIDI automation. It also works with Roland’s AIRA Link and MX-1 Mix Performer for live environments. Roland released the TR-EDITOR software alongside it, a computer-based editor and librarian that expanded editing and organisation, particularly for FM synthesis and large sample libraries.
Visually and physically, the Roland TR-8S built upon the design of the Roland TR-8 with significant refinements. It introduced RGB faders and backlit TR-REC buttons, giving customisable colour coding for each part of a kit, providing essential visual feedback during performance. Its chassis was redesigned to be more substantial and aesthetically appealing, with improved ergonomics for live use. It also added SD card storage, allowing users to back up and restore every kit, pattern, and setting.
As a stage and studio tool, the Roland TR-8S quickly established itself as one of the most complete drum machines available, offering the authenticity of Roland’s historic drum machines alongside future-focused sound design and sequencing tools. Its release confirmed Roland’s ability to honour its heritage while pushing rhythm programming forward for modern musicians.
