Sony DRE Series

The Sony DRE Series comprised two high-end digital reverberation systems that demonstrated Sony’s expertise in professional signal processing. The first, the DRE-2000, released in 1981, was an early digital reverb renowned for its smooth, natural sound and extensive remote control capabilities, quickly becoming a fixture in top studios and broadcast facilities. Nearly two decades later, Sony introduced the DRE-S777, a groundbreaking convolution reverb that used sampled impulse responses of real spaces to create ultra-realistic acoustic environments. Together, the DRE-2000 and DRE-S777 bookend Sony’s digital reverb innovation, from early algorithmic design to true sampled-space realism, making the DRE Series one of the most advanced and influential reverb lines ever produced.

The Sony DRE 2000 was Sony's first digital reverb and they headed straight for the heart of Lexicon with a complex and very advanced system, that also proved fragile. These reverbs are hard to find on the used market, partly because those who have them hang onto them, and partly because many of them have died, proving to be too expensive and difficult to fix.

After the lacklustre DPS-V55, Sony had one last shot at the studio effects market, and they went out on a high with the spectacular DRE-S777 Sampling Reverb. The Sony DRE-S777 was a new type of reverb, one that used real impulse responses to capture real space, rather than the traditional method from the past of trying to emulate a real space.
