The Sony SRP-E1031 Graphic Equaliser was a later Sony professional 31-band graphic equaliser that replaced the Sony MU-E311. The Sony SRP-E1031 Graphic Equaliser retained the core operating concept of the earlier Sony MU-E311, offering detailed equalisation across the full 20 Hz to 20 kHz audio band using 31 separate frequency bands arranged in 1:3 octave steps. This layout allowed the Sony SRP-E1031 Graphic Equaliser to provide precise frequency adjustment for studio, installation, broadcast, reinforcement, and system tuning applications where narrow-band control was required.
The Sony SRP-E1031 Graphic Equaliser followed the same functional approach as the Sony MU-E311, with high and low frequency filtering provided alongside the main graphic equaliser section. The earlier Sony MU-E311 used built-in filters with 18 dB/octave attenuation, an adjustable high-pass filter with a cutoff range from 20 Hz to 300 Hz, and an adjustable low-pass filter with a cutoff range from 4 kHz to 20 kHz. These facilities allowed unwanted low-frequency rumble, handling noise, stage vibration, excessive high-frequency content, and feedback-related problems to be reduced before or after equalisation was applied.
A key addition on the Sony SRP-E1031 Graphic Equaliser was the 6 dB/12 dB slope button for the equaliser section. This gave the later model an additional range control option compared with the older Sony MU-E311, allowing the equaliser’s correction range to be selected for either finer adjustment or broader corrective operation. This made the Sony SRP-E1031 Graphic Equaliser more flexible when used for subtle programme equalisation, room correction, system alignment, or more pronounced frequency shaping.
The Sony SRP-E1031 Graphic Equaliser also adopted a more modern visual design than the Sony MU-E311. The older green and black front panel styling was replaced by a black and grey facia, giving the Sony SRP-E1031 Graphic Equaliser a more restrained and professional appearance consistent with later Sony rackmount equipment. The later power button style also places the Sony SRP-E1031 Graphic Equaliser visually in the period after the Sony MU-E311.
Like the Sony MU-E311, the Sony SRP-E1031 Graphic Equaliser was designed for balanced professional audio environments. The earlier model used floating electrically balanced input and output circuits rather than bulkier transformer-type arrangements, allowing a compact chassis while maintaining wide frequency response and low noise. Input and output levels could be adjusted to suit connected equipment, and peak indicators were provided to show excessive input or output signal clipping.
The Sony SRP-E1031 Graphic Equaliser was intended for rackmount use. The earlier Sony MU-E311 could be fitted into a standard 483 mm rack, with removable feet and removable rack brackets allowing alternative placement in a shelf or equipment rack environment. The Sony SRP-E1031 Graphic Equaliser continued this same practical professional format, combining 31-band graphic equalisation, filtering, level adjustment, clipping indication, and rackmount installation in a compact single-unit design.
