Teletronix LA-2A Leveling Amplifier

Teletronix LA-2A
The Teletronix LA-2A was released in 1962, and along with the Urie 1176, is one of the most iconic compressors ever made, and is still in use today. With Universal Audio having purchased the Teletronix company way back in the mid 1960s, this iconic compressor is available new, made to the exacting specifications.

Teletronix LA-2A Leveling Amplifier Details

The Teletronix LA-2A is a legendary analogue compressor and leveling amplifier that has had a profound impact on the audio industry. Its history is a story of innovation, timeless design, and enduring popularity.

The Teletronix LA-2A was first introduced in the early 1960s by its creator, Jim Lawrence, who ran Teletronix. (and preceeded by the ultra -are LA-2) This device was designed to address the need for a smoother and more transparent form of audio compression. At the time, other compressors were often complex, tube-driven devices with numerous knobs and settings that could be challenging to use effectively.

Teletronix LA-2

The ultra-rare Teletronix LA-2 is a limiter, while the Teletronix LA-2A can function as both a compressor and a limiter, with some versions offering a switch to toggle between the two modes.

What set the LA-2A apart was its use of an entirely different compression mechanism, optical compression. Instead of relying on VCA (Voltage-Controlled Amplifier) or FET (Field-Effect Transistor) technology, the LA-2A utilised an electro-luminescent panel and a photoresistor. This unique setup allowed for a smooth, natural, and highly musical compression. The photoresistor would respond to the incoming audio signal’s level, causing the gain reduction. This optical design remains one of the key defining features of the LA-2A.

The LA-2A’s optical design produced an incredibly musical compression character. It was capable of taming dynamic range and evening out audio levels without causing harsh artifacts or distortion. This gentle, transparent compression was highly sought after in the recording and broadcasting industries.

In addition to its audio qualities, the Teletronix LA-2A became known for its distinctive appearance. It featured a large, eye-catching VU meter on the front panel, which not only provided visual feedback but became an iconic symbol of the device. It’s simple controls included Peak Reduction (compression amount) and Gain (make-up gain) knobs, making it incredibly user-friendly.

Over the years, the Teletronix LA-2A underwent various iterations and updates. The original LA-2A, known as the “Silver Face,” was followed by different versions, including the LA-2A Gray Face and the LA-2A Black Face. While minor changes were made, the core optical compression design remained consistent.

The LA-2A’s legacy continues to this day. It’s considered one of the most beloved and revered audio processors in the recording industry. Engineers and producers value it for its ability to add warmth, character, and control to a wide range of audio sources, from vocals to instruments. Vintage LA-2A units are highly sought after and can command premium prices in the used gear market.

Due to the high demand and enduring popularity of the LA-2A, Universal Audio (UA) has produced faithful reissues of the LA-2A, such as the Teletronix LA-2A Classic Leveling Amplifier and the LA-2A Silver, ensuring that its iconic sound is available to modern recording artists and engineers.

The Teletronix LA-2A compressor is an enduring symbol of audio engineering excellence. Its unique optical compression design, musicality, and iconic appearance have made it a classic in the recording industry, and its influence can be heard on countless recordings across virtually all musical genres.
