The Fostex PD-6 Portable Location Recorder was introduced as a new industry standard for multitrack portable recording on set or in the field. Specifically designed to address the needs of professional film and television production, the Fostex PD-6 offered six-channel recording at 24-bit/96kHz with timecode, writing to 8cm DVD-RAM or an optional 40GB internal hard drive.
By combining a high-specification recorder with a full-function six-channel mixer, the Fostex PD-6 provided an all-in-one solution for production sound mixers, delivering reliability, flexibility and professional connectivity.
Unlike earlier field recorders, the Fostex PD-6 was designed from the ground up to meet the demands of location recording. Its removable or internal media options ensured robust data security and workflow efficiency, with Dual Disk Recording enabling simultaneous writing to both DVD-RAM and hard disk for redundancy.
The addition of the EX12 docking station expanded storage capabilities further, supporting full-size DVD-RAM and an additional 2.5-inch 40GB hard drive. Auto Copy modes, immediate handover of audio files, and user-editable metadata fields streamlined the transfer of recordings into post-production environments.
The six-channel mixer featured microphone and line inputs with full phantom power, phase reverse, selectable high-pass filters, defeatable limiters, and flexible routing options. Each channel could derive its audio feed from three different sources, making the system adaptable to complex production workflows. Monitoring was equally sophisticated, with pre-fade, post-fade, and stereo bus routing via the PAN switch, enabling easy creation of mono or stereo guide mixes.
Timecode support was rock solid, with full compatibility across SMPTE/EBU formats and integration with metadata such as scene, take, and notes. The recorder also featured balanced analogue I/O, AES/EBU and S/PDIF digital I/O, word clock, LTC input and output, and parallel/remote operation. These features made the Fostex PD-6 ideal not only for location sound recording but also for demanding broadcast and studio applications.
Compact yet powerful, with rugged build quality and a removable battery system, the Fostex PD-6 quickly became a trusted tool in high-end film and television production. Its combination of high-resolution multitrack recording, robust media management, and advanced mixer functionality ensured that it lived up to its billing as the “on-cart” industry standard of its time.
