Build quality: The buttons are nice. Its intuitive and fast to program. Its only like 6 inches deep, so with cables plugged in back that’s about 9 inches deep. Sound quality: Its grainy and noisy. Has unbalanced connections. Usefulness: Unique character that’s not easily replicated in-the-box. Mojo: I like to use Quadraverb for its great huge reverb decay because it makes block chords or strings sound beautiful, beefy, and full of grainy character. Reliability: The front panel and screen work great and interface is responsive and easy to navigate. But I probably have a bad unit because sometimes, especially when its first powered on and still cold, the right channel dips by like 14dB so i give the unit a little shake and wiggle the cables in the back to get it working correctly.

Had the unit in our electro studio, was great on all the drum reverbs. To my ears very 1980’s sounding, our unit required a new display.

I have a version 4.00. I have used different Lexicons as well but I think this is even better in vocal use. Absolutely amazing unit!

In it’s day the Fostex D-25 was an insanely expensive recorder, like $20K. I picked mine up a few years ago for around $500, but like all old DAT recorders it had issues, but these things are totally worth fixing given the great build quality and sound quality.

The Fostex DV40 is a brilliant recorder with excellent sound quality and build quality. It is capable of recording to not only DVD-RAM discs, but it can playback other formats as well, ie, CDs, which sound superb on this machine. If for no other reason than to play back CDs, I would highly recommend getting one of these great machines.
